If someone in your family served in uniform — in the Armed Forces, a CAPF, the police, or the railway protection force — and a child of the family has just taken admission to a professional course, this guide is for you. The pm scholarship scheme 2026 is one of the most searched scholarship topics in India right now, and it is also one of the most misunderstood. Some posts claim a huge monthly payout, some mix up two different deadlines, and some confuse this scheme with a completely different "PM scholarship."
This guide clears up all of that. You will learn exactly who this scheme is for, which of its four routes applies to you, how much support you actually get, which documents you need, where and how to apply, and which mistakes cause the most rejections. Read it to the end — because applying on the wrong portal is the single most common error in this scheme.
pm scholarship scheme 2026: What Is PMSS?
The Prime Minister's Scholarship Scheme (PMSS) is a Central Government scholarship that has been running since the academic year 2006-07. Its purpose is to support higher technical and professional education for the dependent wards and widows of personnel who served the country in uniform.
The money comes from the National Defence Fund, administered by the Prime Minister's Office. The scheme is run through different routes by different authorities: the Kendriya Sainik Board (KSB) under the Ministry of Defence handles the families of ex-servicemen; the Welfare and Rehabilitation Board (WARB) under the Ministry of Home Affairs handles CAPF, Assam Rifles and martyred State police families; and the Railway Board's Security Directorate handles RPF/RPSF families.
One thing must be clear from the start: this scheme is not for every student. It is only for families connected to the uniformed services. Students whose parents never served in any force cannot apply here. For them, schemes like PM-USP exist, and the difference is explained in a separate section below.
Quick Facts at a Glance
| Detail | Information |
|---|---|
| Scheme name | Prime Minister's Scholarship Scheme (PMSS) |
| Running since | Academic year 2006-07 |
| Funded by | National Defence Fund (Prime Minister's Office) |
| Run by | KSB (Ministry of Defence) + WARB (Ministry of Home Affairs) + Railway Board |
| Who it is for | Dependent wards and widows of ex-servicemen, CAPF, Assam Rifles, martyred State police, RPF/RPSF personnel |
| Assistance | Boys: equivalent of ₹2,500/month; Girls: equivalent of ₹3,000/month — paid once a year |
| Annual amount | Boys: ₹30,000; Girls: ₹36,000 |
| Total fresh scholarships per year | 8,150 (all four routes combined) |
| Minimum marks | 60% in the Minimum Educational Qualification (MEQ) |
| Application mode | Online only |
| Per family | Maximum 2 wards |
First Step: Find Your Route — There Are Four, Not One
PMSS is not a single form. It runs through four separate routes, and your parent's service decides which one is yours. Choosing the wrong route is the most common mistake, so study this table before doing anything else.
| Route | Parent's service | Run by | Fresh seats per year | Apply on |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PMSS — Ex-Servicemen | Army, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard (retired or deceased) | Kendriya Sainik Board (KSB) | 5,500 (2,750 boys + 2,750 girls) | KSB portal (ksb.gov.in) |
| PMSS — CAPF & Assam Rifles | CRPF, BSF, CISF, ITBP, SSB, Assam Rifles | WARB, Ministry of Home Affairs | 2,000 (1,000 boys + 1,000 girls) | National Scholarship Portal (NSP) |
| PMSS — State/UT Police | State/UT police personnel martyred in terror or Naxal attacks | WARB, Ministry of Home Affairs | 500 (250 boys + 250 girls) | National Scholarship Portal (NSP) |
| PMSS — Railways | RPF and RPSF | Railway Board, Security Directorate | 150 (75 boys + 75 girls) | National Scholarship Portal (NSP) |
Note the split: ex-servicemen families apply on the KSB portal; the other three routes apply on NSP. If you are a KSB-route family and you fill the form on NSP, your application will not reach the right place — and vice versa.
Another important point: under the KSB quota, wards of civilians are not eligible — not even wards of paramilitary personnel. They have their own separate MHA quota.
How Much Support Do You Get? The Truth About the ₹36,000 Claim
Read this section carefully, because this is where the biggest confusion lies. Several social media messages claim PMSS pays "₹36,000 per month." That is wrong.
The real rates are:
| Student | Monthly equivalent | Annual amount |
|---|---|---|
| Boys | ₹2,500 | ₹30,000 |
| Girls | ₹3,000 | ₹36,000 |
So ₹36,000 is the amount for the full year, not for one month. And the money does not arrive every month — the full annual amount is paid once a year, directly into the student's bank account through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT). The first year's amount is paid after selection in the merit list; later years depend on meeting the renewal conditions.
These rates have applied since the academic year 2019-20. Some websites show even larger figures, such as ₹50,000 a year — those do not match the official guidelines, so do not trust them.
The scholarship can continue for the full duration of the course — 2 to 5 years depending on the course — provided you keep meeting the renewal conditions every year. The renewal rules are given separately below, because that is where most scholarships are lost.
Who Can Apply? Full Eligibility Conditions
Conditions common to all routes
- The student must have taken admission in the first year of a first professional degree course in the current academic year.
- The student must have scored at least 60% marks in the Minimum Educational Qualification (MEQ) — the exam on the basis of which admission was taken. For MBBS, the MEQ is Class 12; for B.Tech, it is Class 12 or diploma; for B.Ed and MBA, it is graduation.
- The course must be in India, at an institution approved by AICTE, UGC, the National Medical Commission, or the relevant regulatory body.
- The student must never have availed PMSS before. The scholarship is given for one course only, once.
- Study abroad, distance learning / correspondence courses, and vocational courses are not covered.
- A maximum of 2 wards per family can receive the scholarship.
Route-specific conditions
KSB route (ex-servicemen): Dependent wards and widows are eligible. Under KSB instructions, a male dependent ward is eligible up to 25 years of age at the time of admission to the course, a female dependent ward until she gets married, and a widow candidate has no age limit until remarriage. Master's degree courses are not eligible — only MBA and MCA are exempted.
CAPF and Assam Rifles route: Wards and widows of personnel killed in action, disabled in action, deceased in service, gallantry award winners, and retired/serving PBOR personnel are eligible. In this route, diploma holders who enter B.E./B.Tech second year through lateral entry can also apply.
State/UT Police route: Only dependent wards of police personnel martyred in a terror or Naxal attack. A certificate from the State Government confirming this is mandatory.
RPF/RPSF route: Dependent wards and widows of serving and ex-RPF/RPSF personnel below gazetted officer rank. The college must have an AISHE code.
Income limit — an honest note
Different sources say different things on this point. Summaries of the MHA's 2026-27 guidelines report no income limit for PMSS, while some portals claim a ₹6 lakh annual limit. We are therefore not printing one figure here as confirmed. Before applying, check the official guideline PDF for your own route. Do not delay your application over income — the guideline is the final word.
Which Courses Are Covered?
PMSS covers only first professional degree courses. The MHA list contains about 122 courses. The main groups are:
| Group | Examples |
|---|---|
| Medical | MBBS, BDS, BAMS, BHMS, BUMS, B.Pharma, B.Sc Nursing, BPT, B.V.Sc & AH |
| Engineering and Technical | B.E., B.Tech, B.Arch, B.Sc Computer Science, B.Sc Electronics, B.Stat |
| Management | BBA, BBM, BCA, BMS, BHMCT, MBA, MCA |
| Other Professional | B.Sc Agriculture, B.Ed, LLB, BA LLB, B.Design, BFA, BJMC, B.Sc Forestry |
Not covered: plain BA, B.Sc or B.Com degrees (they are not on the approved list); diploma courses that do not lead to a degree; master's degrees except MBA and MCA; distance/correspondence courses; courses studied abroad; and a second course if you have already used PMSS once.
For integrated/dual degree courses, only the professional part is paid — for example, four years for B.Tech + M.Tech, and two years (the B.Ed part only) for BA + B.Ed. Check whether your course is on the approved list in your route's guideline before applying.
Last Date: Two Separate Calendars — Do Not Mix Them Up
This is where most mistakes happen. The KSB route and the NSP routes have different dates.
NSP routes (CAPF, Assam Rifles, State Police, RPF) — 2026-27
| Activity | Date |
|---|---|
| Applications open | 1 June 2026 |
| Last date for students | 31 October 2026 |
| Defective application correction | 15 November 2026 |
| Institute verification (Level 1) | 15 November 2026 |
| Nodal Officer verification (Level 2) | 30 November 2026 |
KSB route (ex-servicemen) — 2026-27
| Activity | Date |
|---|---|
| Applications open | 1 August 2026 |
| Last date for students | 31 December 2026 |
The KSB date of 31 December comes from sources reporting the KSB notice. While writing this article, ksb.gov.in itself could not be opened directly (a server error was returned), so we took this date from sources citing the KSB notice — please confirm the date on the KSB portal before applying. Dates can also be extended, so keep checking the portal.
Documents Checklist
Keep these documents scanned and ready before you start the application. Incomplete or unclear documents are the biggest cause of rejection.
- Ex-Servicemen / Ex-Coast Guard certificate (from Zila Sainik Board or the concerned authority)
- Bonafide Certificate — signed by the competent authority of the college (Principal, Dean, Registrar, etc.)
- Aadhaar card (of the student)
- First page of the student's bank passbook (student's name, account number, IFSC clearly visible)
- Aadhaar-bank linking certificate (from the bank, in the prescribed format)
- Class 10 marksheet (as proof of date of birth)
- MEQ marksheet — Class 12 / graduation / diploma, as per the course
- PPO / ESM ID card
- Category-specific supporting documents — death certificate, disability certificate, gallantry award certificate, as applicable
- Income certificate (if your route's guideline asks for it)
One practical tip: enter the student's own mobile number and email ID in the application, not the parent's. All SMS alerts go to the student's number, and that number must stay active throughout the course.
How to Apply: Step-by-Step
Route A — KSB portal (ex-servicemen families)
- Go to the official KSB website ksb.gov.in and open the PMSS section.
- Download Annexures 1, 2 and 3 and fill them carefully — use only the official format.
- Click "Apply Online" and register with a passport-size photo.
- Activate your account using the Login ID, Password and activation link sent to your email.
- Log in to the dashboard, click "New Application" and select PMSS.
- Fill Part-1, Part-2 and Part-3 — student, study, bank and ESM-family details.
- Upload all documents as clear scans, in the correct fields.
- Click "Save and Forward." Note this well — merely saving is not enough; an application that is not forwarded is not treated as submitted.
- Download the acknowledgement slip and keep it safe.
After this, the application passes through verification by the Zila Sainik Board (ZSB), then the Rajya Sainik Board (RSB), and then KSB.
Route B — NSP (CAPF, police, RPF families)
- Go to the National Scholarship Portal scholarships.gov.in.
- Under Applicant Corner, click "Apply For One Time Registration (OTR)" and create your OTR. Keep your OTR ID safe — it is your identity on the portal.
- Log in with your OTR ID and password, then click "Apply For Scholarship."
- Select the PMSS scheme matching your parent's force — CAPF/Assam Rifles, State/UT Police, or RPF/RPSF.
- Fill in personal, academic and family details, plus the service-related details of the personnel.
- Upload the documents, check every detail once more, then submit. Details cannot be changed after submission.
- Save the Application ID / acknowledgement.
After submission, the college verifies first (Level 1), then the nodal officer (Level 2), and then the merit list is prepared. Getting your form verified by your college on time is your responsibility — if college verification is missed, the file does not move forward.
How to Check Your Status
Do not submit the application and forget it — keep checking the status.
- KSB route: Log in to the KSB portal dashboard with your Login ID and Password. If the application is under "observation," read the reason, correct the problem, and forward it again.
- NSP route: Log in at scholarships.gov.in with your OTR credentials and open "Application Status" — it will show Submitted, Under Verification, Approved or Rejected.
- Payment status: On the PFMS portal (pfms.nic.in), use "Know Your Payment" with your bank account or Aadhaar details to check payment.
- Merit list: The KSB route's final merit list is uploaded on the KSB website.
How Selection Works: Priority and Merit
PMSS is not automatic — meeting the eligibility conditions is not enough; you must make it to the merit list. Selection looks at two things: priority category and marks in the MEQ.
The KSB route's priority order is: (1) wards/widows of personnel killed in action; (2) personnel disabled in action; (3) personnel who died in harness for causes attributable to service; (4) personnel disabled in service with disability attributable to service; (5) gallantry award winners; (6) wards of ex-servicemen (PBOR only). Separate merit lists are prepared for boys and girls.
The CAPF route follows the same principle in Categories A to G — killed in action, then disabled in action, then died because of duty, then gallantry award, then PBOR, and finally serving PBOR (only if seats remain). When marks are equal, tie-break factors are applied in a fixed order, including orphan candidates, wards of widows, the parent's junior rank, longer course duration, longer service of the personnel, and the student's age.
Renewal Rules — Where Most Scholarships Are Lost
Selection in the first year is not the end. Renewal every year is compulsory:
- Score at least 50% marks in each semester / academic year.
- Clear all subjects in the first attempt. Failing a subject or getting a reappear can close the scholarship permanently.
- Continue in the same course and the same institution.
- Apply for renewal within 1 year of the declaration of the result.
- After receiving the scholarship amount, update the payment date and amount received in the renewal form on KSB/NSP — this is a mandatory audit requirement. Missing it can lead to cancellation of the scholarship and recovery of money already paid.
Straight advice: if you are struggling in any year, talk to your college and ZSB/RSB early. After a failure, there is almost no "one more chance" in this scheme.
Why Applications Get Rejected — Avoid These Mistakes
- Applying on the wrong route/portal (a KSB family on NSP, or vice versa)
- Less than 60% marks in the MEQ
- Incomplete, unclear, or wrongly uploaded documents
- "Saved" but not "Forwarded" (KSB route)
- College verification not completed on time
- Course not on the approved list, or in distance/correspondence mode
- Already receiving another scholarship/concession larger than the PMSS amount
- Bank account not linked with Aadhaar, or a minor account not converted to a major account
- Studying at a university declared "fake" by UGC
- Name/date of birth in the form not matching Aadhaar
Most of these mistakes can be avoided by reading the filled form once calmly before submitting.
PM Scholarship vs PM-USP — Do Not Confuse Them
Searching "PM scholarship" brings up two different schemes, and both have October deadlines — so the confusion is natural. Here is the clear difference:
| PMSS (this scheme) | PM-USP (CSSS) | |
|---|---|---|
| For whom | Wards/widows of uniformed-service families | Meritorious students above the 80th percentile in Class 12 |
| Based on | Parent's service record + 60% in MEQ | Board exam merit + family income limit |
| Amount | ₹30,000 (boys) / ₹36,000 (girls) per year | ₹12,000/year for the first 3 years, then ₹20,000/year |
| Courses | Only first professional degree courses | Regular degree courses also |
| Apply on | KSB portal / NSP (as per route) | NSP |
If your parents never served in any force, PMSS is not for you — look at PM-USP instead. Our PM-USP renewal guide is here: PM-USP Scholarship 2026 Renewal Guide. Beware of Scams — Recognise These Red Flags
- There is no application fee for PMSS. If any person, agent or "help centre" asks for money, it is fraud.
- Applications happen only on the official portals (ksb.gov.in and scholarships.gov.in). Do not fill forms through links received on WhatsApp.
- Claims like "₹36,000 per month" or "guaranteed scholarship without merit" are false.
- Nobody can get your name into the merit list for you. Selection is by priority + marks.
- Never share your OTR password, OTP or bank details with anyone.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q1. What is the Prime Minister's Scholarship Scheme (PMSS)? It is a Central Government scholarship that gives financial support for first professional degree courses to the dependent wards and widows of ex-servicemen, CAPF, Assam Rifles, martyred State police and RPF/RPSF personnel. It has run since 2006-07 and is funded from the National Defence Fund.
Q2. How much money is given under PMSS? Boys get the equivalent of ₹2,500 per month (₹30,000 per year) and girls get the equivalent of ₹3,000 per month (₹36,000 per year). The full annual amount comes once a year, directly into the bank account through DBT — not as a monthly instalment.
Q3. What is the last date for PMSS 2026-27? It depends on your route. For NSP routes (CAPF, State Police, RPF), the student last date is 31 October 2026. For the KSB route (ex-servicemen), the KSB notice reportedly gives 31 December 2026 as the last date — confirm it on the KSB portal before applying.
Q4. Can students who passed Class 12 apply? Yes, if they have taken admission in the first year of an eligible first professional course in the current year and scored 60% or more in the MEQ. Students already in the second or later years cannot apply fresh (except some lateral-entry exceptions).
Q5. Can BA or B.Sc (plain) students apply? No. PMSS is only for approved first professional degree courses — such as B.Tech, MBBS, BBA, BCA, B.Ed, LLB. Plain BA, B.Sc or B.Com degrees are not on the approved list.
Q6. What do I have to do for renewal? Apply for online renewal every year, score at least 50% marks each year, and clear all subjects in the first attempt. Failing or getting a reappear can close the scholarship permanently.
Q7. What is the difference between PMSS and PM-USP? PMSS is for uniformed-service families and is based on the service record plus 60% marks. PM-USP is based on Class 12 merit (above the 80th percentile) and an income limit, and it also covers regular degree courses. They are two different schemes with different portals and rules.
Q8. How do I check my status? KSB-route students check the KSB portal dashboard; NSP-route students log in at scholarships.gov.in with OTR credentials; payments can be checked on the PFMS portal (pfms.nic.in) through "Know Your Payment."
