PM Ujjwala Yojana 2026: Free LPG Connection, Rs 300 Subsidy, Eligibility and Online Application Guide

Updated: 27 October 2026

Quick Facts: PM Ujjwala Yojana 2026

Scheme: Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY). Who gets it: an adult woman of a poor household, and the connection is deposit-free. Subsidy: Rs 300, up to 9 refills in 2025-26; Rs 300, only the first 4 refills in 2026-27. Official portals: pmuy.gov.in and mopnge-seva.in.

How to Check Your Subsidy Status

First, open pmuy.gov.in and use ‘Locate Us’ to find your distributor. Then check the refill record with the distributor and look for the DBT credit in your bank statement. Note: on 27 October 2026, detailed steps for mylpg.in, PFMS and UMANG were not verified, so their steps are not given here.

If the Subsidy Has Not Arrived: Check in This Order

  1. Count refills in this financial year: in 2026-27 only the first 4 refills get Rs 300, so no credit on a 5th refill follows from that rule.
  2. Check Aadhaar-bank linking and e-KYC: this proves the DBT route is active.
  3. Check the LPG ID and consumer record with the distributor: this proves the refill was recorded under the right connection.
  4. Check the bank statement for the DBT credit: this proves whether the payment reached your account.
  5. If it still has not arrived, follow the complaint ladder below.

How to Complain: Distributor to MoPNG

  1. Contact your LPG distributor first.
  2. Then call OMC helpline 14438 (Ujjwala Helpline) or 14428 (Toll Free Helpline).
  3. Then complain on MoPNG e-Seva, mopnge-seva.in, or write to support@mopnge-seva.in.
  4. Give in the complaint: consumer number and name, service provider and agency name, city, district and state, and contact number.
  5. Call 1906 only for a gas-leak-type emergency; it is not the subsidy-complaint number.

What the Scheme Is and When It Started

Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana was launched on 1 May 2016 from Ballia in Uttar Pradesh by Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself. It is run by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas. The goal is simple and direct — take clean cooking fuel, that is LPG gas, to poor households and end dependence on firewood, dung cakes and coal. A notable feature is that the gas connection is issued in the name of an adult woman of the household, which also pushes women’s empowerment forward.

On 10 August 2021, the second phase of the scheme — PMUY 2.0 — was launched from Mahoba, also in Uttar Pradesh. It brought a special relaxation for migrant families: those who do not have a ration card or address proof can now apply on the basis of a self-declaration (Annexure-I). This means labourer families who moved to other states for work are no longer left out of the scheme.

The official numbers show how far the scheme has reached. According to the official counter on pmuy.gov.in, a total of 105,685,306 connections — over 10.57 crore — had been released as on 23 September 2026. Of the latest 25-lakh extension, 2,442,525 connections have already been released. These figures show the scheme is working on the ground, not just on paper.

What You Get Free With the Connection

A Ujjwala connection is “deposit-free”, which means you do not pay any security deposit for the cylinder. Here is everything that comes free with it — the security deposit of the cylinder, the pressure regulator, the suraksha hose, the DGCC booklet and the installation charges. You do not spend a single rupee on any of these items while getting the connection installed.

For the first refill (the filled cylinder) and the hotplate, that is the gas stove, you have two options. You can pay the cost upfront, or you can pay through EMI, which is recovered from the subsidy you receive. The advantage is that there is no big burden on your pocket at the start, and you can pay gradually.

Rs 300 Subsidy per Cylinder: the FY 2025-26 Decision

On 8 August 2025, the Union Cabinet decided to continue the targeted LPG subsidy for Ujjwala beneficiaries in the financial year 2025-26, with a budget of Rs 12,000 crore. Under this decision, Ujjwala beneficiaries get a subsidy of Rs 300 on a 14.2 kg cylinder, applicable on up to 9 refills in a year.

Understand one thing clearly here — the subsidy applies to 9 refills only, not 12. Many people live with the confusion that every cylinder through the year carries the subsidy, but the official rule caps it at 9 refills. If you take more than 9 cylinders, you will pay the full price on the extra ones. Keep this limit in mind while booking refills so you can plan your budget correctly.

Big Change for FY 2026-27: Subsidy Now Only on 4 Refills

On 9 June 2026, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas revised the Ujjwala subsidy structure. PMUY beneficiaries will now get the Rs 300 per-cylinder subsidy only on the first 4 refills in a year — down from 9 earlier. That caps the maximum annual benefit at Rs 1,200 for FY 2026-27. Refills from the 5th cylinder onward are charged at the full market price.

The ministry’s rationale: average annual LPG consumption among PMUY beneficiaries is 4.43 cylinders (2024-25), so most households stay within the limit. The decision follows a sharp rise in international LPG prices amid West Asia tensions and mounting losses for oil marketing companies.

One more important rule: reports say biometric Aadhaar authentication is mandatory to book refills at the subsidised price from 1 October 2026. The Delhi High Court on 14 October 2026 asked the Centre to respond to a petition challenging this rule — the next hearing is on 18 November 2026.

Financial yearSubsidised refillsPer cylinderMax annual benefit
2025-26Up to 9Rs 300Rs 2,700
2026-27Up to 4Rs 300Rs 1,200

Relief for Ujjwala beneficiaries in Uttar Pradesh: the state cabinet has approved 2 free refills for FY 2026-27 (one each in the Oct-Dec 2026 and Jan-Mar 2027 windows). Full details here: UP Free LPG Cylinder 2026.

25 Lakh New Connections: the 2025-26 Expansion

In September 2025, the Cabinet approved 25 lakh new deposit-free Ujjwala connections for FY 2025-26, with a provision of Rs 676 crore. This means the doors are still open for eligible families that have not received a connection so far. As mentioned above, 2,442,525 connections under this expansion had already been released by 23 September 2026.

If there is a family around you that is eligible but has not applied yet, do share this information with them. A new connection comes fully deposit-free, so no big amount is needed at the start.

Who Can Apply: Eligibility Conditions

To take the benefit of Ujjwala Yojana, the applicant must be an adult woman aged 18 years or above. The second most important condition is that the applicant’s household must not already have an LPG connection in the name of any family member. If the house already has a gas connection, a fresh application will not be accepted.

Along with this, the applicant must fall into one of the following categories:

  • Families included in the SECC 2011 list
  • SC / ST households
  • Beneficiaries of Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana-Gramin (PMAY-G)
  • Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY) families
  • Forest dweller families
  • Residents of islands and river islands
  • Tea and ex-tea garden tribe families

PMUY 2.0 has a special provision for migrant families — those without a ration card or address proof can apply through a self-declaration (Annexure-I). This has made applying much easier for labourer families working in other states.

Documents Required for Application

Keep the following documents ready before you apply, so that nothing interrupts you while filling the form:

  • Aadhaar card of the applicant, and Aadhaar cards of adult family members
  • Ration card, or the state’s family ID, or (for migrants) the self-declaration
  • Bank account details (the subsidy is transferred straight into the account)
  • Proof of address
  • Supplementary KYC — details of the family composition
  • Passport-size photograph

The bank account must be linked with Aadhaar, because the subsidy amount is transferred directly into the bank account. If the account is not Aadhaar-linked, visit your bank and get it linked first.

Online Application: Step-by-Step Method

Applying online from home is very simple. Follow the steps below carefully:

  1. First, open the official portal pmuy.gov.in.
  2. On the homepage, click the option “Apply for New Ujjwala PMUY Connection”.
  3. Choose your preferred Oil Marketing Company (OMC) — Indane (IndianOil), Bharat Gas (BPCL) or HP Gas (HPCL).
  4. For Aadhaar e-KYC, enter your Aadhaar number and complete verification with the OTP received on your mobile.
  5. Fill in all the details asked in the application form correctly — name, address, family members’ details, bank account and so on.
  6. Upload the required documents and submit the form.
  7. After submission you will get an application reference number — note it down safely, because you will need it to check your status.

While filling the form, re-check the name, Aadhaar number and bank account details. Even a small mistake can stall the application, so read every field carefully before submitting.

Offline Application: Through Distributor and CSC

If you find the online form difficult, or do not have internet access, there is no need to worry. You can apply by visiting your nearest LPG distributor — you will get the application form there, which you fill and submit along with the documents.

You can also apply through your nearest CSC (Common Service Centre), also called Jan Seva Kendra. At the CSC, the operator fills the entire form with your help and uploads the documents. For people living in villages this is the easiest route, because a CSC is available in almost every block.

How to Check Your Application Status

After submitting the application, it is important to track its progress. There are two easy ways to check the status — first, go to the portal or mobile app of the oil company (Indane, Bharat Gas or HP Gas) you applied through, and enter your application reference number to see the status. The second way is to contact your nearest LPG distributor, who can tell you the current position of your application from the reference number.

If any document is incomplete or some detail is wrong, the status will show that reason. Do not panic in that case — fix the shortcoming and resubmit the information.

Gas Refill Booking: Numbers of All Three Companies

Once you get the connection, you need to book a refill when the cylinder runs out. Booking numbers are different for the three companies — save them in your mobile:

CompanyIVRS numberMissed callWhatsApp
Indane (IndianOil)771895555584549555557588888824
Bharat Gas (BPCL)7715012345, 771801234577109555551800224344
HP Gas (HPCL)—94936022229222201122

Apart from these, refills can also be booked at CSC centres. Booking through BBPS is also available via UPI apps like Paytm, PhonePe, Google Pay and Amazon. Choose whichever method feels easiest to you.

Common Reasons Applications Get Stuck, and How to Avoid Them

Many times the connection is delayed even after the application is submitted. The reasons are usually tied to the eligibility conditions themselves. The most common one is that the household already has an LPG connection in some member’s name — in that case the new application is not accepted under the rules. The second common reason is a mismatch between Aadhaar and bank account details, such as a different spelling of the name, or the account not being Aadhaar-linked.

To avoid these problems, check all your details two or three times before filling the form. The name on the Aadhaar card, bank passbook and ration card should match. If an application gets stuck, meet your distributor to learn the exact reason and fix the shortcoming — in most cases a small correction is all it takes.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

On how many cylinders does the Ujjwala subsidy apply?

As per the Cabinet decision for FY 2025-26, Ujjwala beneficiaries get a subsidy of Rs 300 on a 14.2 kg cylinder, applicable on up to 9 refills in a year. If you take more than 9 cylinders, you pay the full price on the extra ones. From FY 2026-27, as per the Petroleum Ministry’s 9 June 2026 decision, the subsidy applies only to the first 4 refills (Rs 300 per cylinder, maximum Rs 1,200 per year).

Migrant workers do not have a ration card. Can they apply?

Yes, they definitely can. PMUY 2.0 has a special provision for migrant families — those who do not have a ration card or address proof can apply on the basis of a self-declaration (Annexure-I). No ration card is needed.

What should the age of the applicant be?

The applicant must be an adult woman aged 18 years or above. The gas connection is issued in the name of an adult woman of the household.

Who pays for the first refill and the gas stove?

For the first refill and the hotplate (gas stove) there are two options — you can pay upfront, or pay through EMI, which is recovered from the subsidy you receive. The cylinder’s security deposit, regulator, suraksha hose, DGCC booklet and installation charges are completely free.

What are the Ujjwala Yojana helpline numbers?

Call 1906 for an LPG emergency (like a gas leak). For information about Ujjwala Yojana, 14438 is the Ujjwala helpline, and 14428 is the toll-free number.

How do I check my application status?

Go to the portal or mobile app of the oil company (Indane, Bharat Gas or HP Gas) you applied through and enter your application reference number to see the status. You can also ask your nearest LPG distributor about the current position of your application.

Can I apply if the house already has a gas connection?

No. As per the scheme’s condition, the applicant’s household must not already have an LPG connection in the name of any family member. If a connection already exists, a new application will not be accepted.

Is the gas stove (hotplate) also free?

The hotplate does not fall in the free category. Its cost is either paid upfront or recovered through EMI from the subsidy. The free items include the cylinder deposit, regulator, suraksha hose, DGCC booklet and installation.

What is Ujjwala 3.0?

Searches for ‘Ujjwala 3.0’ refer to the 25 lakh additional deposit-free connections approved for FY 2025-26. The government has not announced a separate ‘3.0’ phase — eligibility and the application process are the same as covered in this article, and the current subsidy rule for FY 2026-27 is Rs 300 per cylinder on the first 4 refills only (see the subsidy section above).
