In the hill villages of Uttarakhand, the birth of a daughter still brings two feelings at once. There is joy, and there is worry. The worry is about her studies, about the road ahead, and about whether the family will be able to support her education all the way. Every parent wants their daughter to study, grow, and stand on her own feet. But many times, a shortage of money comes in the way of that dream.
To reduce this worry, the Uttarakhand government runs a scheme that stands with the family at the two most important turning points in a daughter’s life. The first is the day she is born, and the second is the day she finishes school and steps into higher education. In this article, we explain the whole scheme in simple language. Where to apply, who can apply, which documents are needed, and which mistakes to avoid while applying, you will find all of it here.
Read the article till the end, because we have also added the questions that families ask most often. If you are a permanent resident of Uttarakhand and have a daughter at home, this information can be very useful for you.

What Is Nanda Gaura Yojana
Nanda Gaura Yojana is a girl-focused scheme of the Uttarakhand government. Its aim is clear: to make the birth of a daughter an occasion of happiness rather than a burden, and to stop a daughter’s education from ending midway for want of money. Under the scheme, a family gets financial help twice. The first help comes when a daughter is born. The second comes when she passes Class 12 and takes admission in higher education.
The scheme was earlier known as the Gaura Devi Kanya Dhan Yojana. It was later renamed Nanda Gaura Yojana. The name changed, but the purpose stayed the same: to support daughters from birth to education. Today the scheme runs under the Women Empowerment and Child Development Department of Uttarakhand, and all applications are filled online on the official portal nandagaurauk.in.
One special feature of the scheme is that the money is sent directly to the beneficiary’s bank account. There is no cash transaction in between. That is why filling the bank account details correctly is very important while applying. The account must be linked with Aadhaar. For the birth stage, a joint account of the parent or guardian with the baby girl is required, while for the Class 12 stage, the student’s own bank account is required.
In February 2026, about Rs 145.93 crore was sent directly to the accounts of 33,251 beneficiary girls under this scheme. This shows that the scheme is not just on paper; its benefit is actually reaching families.
How Much Help Is Given in Each Stage
The benefit under Nanda Gaura Yojana is given in two stages. The amount is different for each stage, and applications for the two stages have to be made at different times. The table below makes this clear.
| Stage | When it is given | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| First stage | At the birth of the daughter | Rs 11,000 |
| Second stage | After passing Class 12 | Rs 51,000 |
| Total | Both stages combined | Rs 62,000 |
The first stage is linked to birth. The application must be made within 6 months of the daughter’s birth. If 6 months pass, the portal will not accept the application. So as soon as the birth certificate and the institutional delivery certificate are received, the family should start preparing the application.
The second stage is linked to Class 12. Every financial year, the last date for applications in this stage is fixed as 30 November. For girls who passed Class 12 this year, applications opened on 22 August 2026 and can be filled till 30 November 2026. Applications made after this date will not be accepted.
One more thing to know: the scheme runs on a first come, first served basis, subject to the availability of budget. So waiting for the last date is not wise. It is better to apply as soon as the documents are ready.
Note: the home page of the official portal lists the application dates and rules in detail, but it does not display a separate list of the rupee amounts. The amounts given above are as per the published guidelines of the scheme. Before applying, do check the information given on the portal once as well.
Who Can Apply: Eligibility
The benefit of this scheme is not open to every family. Some clear conditions have been fixed. Read them carefully before applying, because an application with wrong information is rejected.
- Permanent resident: The girl child must be a native or permanent resident of Uttarakhand. Residents of other states cannot take benefit under this scheme. A permanent residence certificate has to be submitted with the application.
- Two-daughter limit: Only up to two living girl children of a family can get the benefit of this scheme. An application for a third daughter will not be accepted.
- Birth stage condition: For the benefit at birth, the application must be made within 6 months of the girl’s birth. Applications made after 6 months will not be accepted.
- Class 12 stage condition: The second-stage benefit is given only to a girl who has passed Class 12 (Intermediate). Documents of admission in higher education are also asked for, which means admission in a graduation or diploma course is required.
- Unmarried: For the second stage, the affidavit must state that the daughter taking the benefit is unmarried.
- Income limit: The annual income of the family should not be more than Rs 72,000, which is about Rs 6,000 per month. An income certificate has to be submitted with the application.
- Bank account: The bank account must be active and linked with Aadhaar. For the birth stage, a joint account of the parent or guardian with the baby is needed, while for the Class 12 stage, the student’s own account is needed. A Jan Dhan account should not be given.
- One application per stage: If an application is made more than once for the same girl for the same stage, the application will be rejected.
If your family meets these conditions, you can apply. If any condition is not met, try to complete it before applying, for example by getting an income certificate or a residence certificate made.

Mistakes to Avoid While Applying
Every year, many applications are rejected because of small mistakes. You can keep your application safe by avoiding the mistakes given below.
- Wrong or incomplete information: A mistake in the name, date of birth, or address in the form is the biggest reason for rejection. Fill the information only after matching it with the documents.
- Blurred documents: Do not upload a document bigger than 200 KB or one that cannot be read clearly. Open every document and check it before uploading.
- Wrong bank account: Giving a closed account, a wrong account number, or a Jan Dhan account can block the money. Make sure the account is active and linked with Aadhaar.
- Delaying the application: Applications will not be accepted after 6 months in the birth stage and after 30 November in the Class 12 stage. Do not wait for the last day.
- Two applications for the same stage: Applying more than once for the same girl for the same stage leads to rejection of the application.
- Filling an offline form: The scheme is fully online. A form filled on paper will not be accepted in any case.
- Paying someone: This scheme is free. If any person asks for money in the name of the application, it can be a fraud. Use only the official portal.
How to Check the Application Status
After submitting the form, log in to the official portal nandagaurauk.in with your login details to know the status of the application. The current status of your application will be shown there. If there is any shortcoming in the application, the department will send information about it. In such a case, submit the asked-for documents or information on time. Do not trust any other website or person to get information about the status of the application.
Important Things to Know About Nanda Gaura Yojana
To understand this scheme, a few more things are worth knowing. First, this scheme is only for the daughters of Uttarakhand. Second, the benefit is given only twice, not at any stage in between. Third, to get the second-stage benefit, passing Class 12 alone is not enough; admission in higher education is also needed. Fourth, the scheme runs on a first come, first served basis, so applying on time is the wisest step.
If there are Anganwadi workers in your village or town, you can also take help from them. The certificate given by the Anganwadi worker is among the documents needed for the application, and they can also give information about the application process.
It is also useful to know about other schemes related to the education of daughters. The central government’s Beti Bachao Beti Padhao scheme works on the education and safety of daughters, and the Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana is a good way to save for a daughter’s future.
