What Is the Bhagini Nivedita Scheme?
The Bhagini Nivedita Scheme is the West Bengal government’s new education assistance scheme. It was announced by Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari after a cabinet meeting. The scheme aims to financially support girls who want to complete their degree before marriage.
Under the scheme, unmarried women will receive a total of Rs 50,000 over the three years of their degree. The money will be sent directly to the beneficiary’s account. The government believes this help will let more girls complete their college education instead of dropping out midway due to financial pressure.
How Will the Rs 50,000 Be Given? (Year-wise Breakup)
The Rs 50,000 will not come at once — it will be given in installments over three years:
- First year (first year of degree): Rs 17,000
- Second year (second year of degree): Rs 17,000
- Third year (third year of degree): Rs 16,000
- Total: Rs 50,000
This method has been chosen so that the student continues her studies all three years — each year’s amount will motivate her to stay in college for the next year too.
Who Was Bhagini Nivedita?
The scheme is named after Bhagini Nivedita, who is regarded as a pioneer of women’s education in India. Her original name was Margaret Elizabeth Noble — she was born in Ireland in 1867. After meeting Swami Vivekananda in London in 1895, she was so inspired by his ideas that she came to India in 1898.
In Bagbazar, Kolkata, she opened a school for girls — at a time when girls’ education was not given much importance. She dedicated her entire life to women’s education and social service in India. She passed away in Darjeeling in 1911. By naming the scheme after her, the government has carried forward the same message of women’s education — that every girl should get a full chance to study. Her famous words reminded India that educating a girl educates an entire family.
Who Can Benefit from This Scheme?
According to the announcement so far, the benefit will go to unmarried women pursuing higher education (degree courses). But note — the detailed eligibility conditions like age limit, income limit, residency conditions and type of college (government/private) are still awaiting official announcement.
The scheme will roll out from January 2027, so detailed guidelines will be issued in the coming months. As soon as the official rules arrive, we will update this article. Until then, do not trust any claim about an “eligibility list” or “form”.
When Will the Scheme Start?
The Chief Minister has clearly said the Bhagini Nivedita Scheme will be implemented across the state from January 2027. That means right now is the preparation time — rules, the application process and portal details will emerge in the coming months.
If you are thinking of taking college admission in 2027, this scheme could help you. Keep your documents (Aadhaar card, residence proof, educational certificates) ready in advance.
How to Apply?
The application process has not been officially announced yet. Usually in such schemes, applications are taken through an online portal or through colleges, but nothing has been decided for the Bhagini Nivedita Scheme yet.
Stay alert: After the scheme’s announcement, fake forms and “registration links” may spread on social media. Apply only when there is a government announcement or information on the official portal. Never pay money or share OTP with anyone in the name of application.
Other Big Decisions from the Same Cabinet Meeting
Along with the Bhagini Nivedita Scheme, several other important announcements were made in the cabinet meeting:
- 14,454 government recruitments: Recruitment to 14,454 government posts will be done in six to eight months — in forests, fire services, prisons, home and hill affairs departments.
- Karmabandhu honorarium raised: The monthly remuneration of part-time support staff (Karmabandhus) was raised from Rs 5,000 to Rs 8,000.
- Hostel allowance raised: The food allowance for SC/ST students in government hostels was raised from Rs 1,800 to Rs 3,300 per month.
- Police recruitment: Appointment formalities for around 12,000 posts will be completed on October 11.
Existing Women Welfare Schemes
The Bhagini Nivedita Scheme is new in West Bengal’s chain of women welfare schemes. The state already gives Rs 3,000 every month to women under Annapurna Bhandar (earlier Lakshmir Bhandar). For girl students, two major schemes are already running:
- Kanyashree Prakalpa: Annual scholarship for unmarried schoolgirl students aged 13 to 18, and a one-time Rs 25,000 assistance on reaching 18 years while remaining unmarried. This scheme is for school-level girls.
- Rupashree Prakalpa: One-time Rs 25,000 assistance at the time of marriage at age 18 for girls from economically weaker families.
The Bhagini Nivedita Scheme is different — it focuses specifically on unmarried girls pursuing college/degree-level higher education. So Kanyashree supports girls through school, and the Bhagini Nivedita Scheme will help with college studies. Together, the three schemes cover every stage of a girl’s education.
What to Keep Ready from Now?
The scheme starts in January 2027, but smart students can prepare right now. These documents will be useful as soon as applications open:
- Aadhaar card — name and birth date must be correct
- Residence proof — permanent residence of West Bengal
- Educational certificates — Class 12 marksheet and college admission proof
- Bank account — in the student’s own name, linked with Aadhaar
- Proof of being unmarried — the scheme is for unmarried women, so a declaration/certificate may be asked
- Passport-size photo and mobile number
Note, this is a general preparation list — the actual document list will come only in the official guidelines. But there is no harm in keeping these papers ready in advance.
